yeeeeeeeeeeeeeea.

actually under levelled and lacking width.

Can see this as a new phase.

It doesn't particularly excite me.

ok

50's

dem aliens.

I'd have left the kit out the opening but also have used a natural kit with some verb.

composition is good. sound choice good. Maybe a bit bassy. And thin?

there's something here

What is left for me to say?

Maybe the mix has some hiss that should have been removed?

The vox are great, love the guitar and harmonium. The sweep and swells are ace. There's just a lot of noise that I personally would try to remove. I think the dynamic range is flatter than expected, the track seems to ride the mid range predominately.

I don't personally like the track as something i'd listen to. Though as a b side or filler it could serve a purpose. I have heard you make and mix better.

5 always

Kingbastard responds:

Thanks for the review. So, the hiss/noise is from the tape on which elements were recorded. If you listen closely the hiss goes away after the first half. The noise and lo-fi elements are very purposeful. I think the mix is pretty close to the sound I was aiming for on this particular song, so I'm happy with it. It's not meant to be clean and polished. The vocals and guitars were recorded using the direct mic on my iMac, mainly for the lack of quality it provides! I like to think of it as "Hi-Fi-Lo-Fi" piece.

And here we are with your signature tone.

This sounds very low middy. Your bass cuts everything else out. Keep that bass, mix the rest to the upper mid and pan some. I ain't on monitors but you appear to have some phasing issues. like the track was in mono then stereo converted.

There's lots of good to work with here. I think the mix is dragging it down.

That rumble is peaky, maybe roll the db back before the mix.

Huge chorus, lots of clip. Hats too dry.

love the twhippy percussion, harks to joy division.

2 minutes in. It's peaky. I kinda like it though. There's some nice scrapes, but it's overall overwhelmed by the clipped low end.

I think there's potential in redoing this, as a fresh start, maybe from around the 2 min mark, build into a dnb or breaks. Need to eq the section first.

heard better but 5 anyway

Midnights-Ocean responds:

Ah good. Thanks for all the notes. I was very happy with this as a tune but dissatisfied with the mix. No hats used, just a metal bowl with water. Lows show no clipping, so I'm not sure what you are hearing. Maybe something somewhere. The low end is from a mono synth that sports a bit of percussive high end "pop" along with the lows. The original recording was done on an old 4 track tape machine live. Those kinds of adventures can sometimes be cumbersome to mix afterwards. At 2:30 it sounds like there's some compressor or something clipping on the pad. Did a bit of poking around. The pad's 200Hz band was triggering clip distortion on the main's multi band limiter for some reason. First time I've had that plugin give clip distortion like that. Very odd. I fixed it though. Submission file is replaced with updated mix. Thanks for the feedback.

someone hit frontpage ha. congrats bro.

now to drink it in.

how much space and drone is going on here, it's like the peak of acid. the panning is ace. that bass that comes in really helps fill the range. The piano, some parts feel too back and washed by the mid but then it comes strong.

Well fuck me it's ten minutes long. lets see where you take this.

i'm expecting some signature glitch and it's not happened. I can hear a version where you bang a beat and vocal and really elevate this, spiritualized/primal scream. Do you get what I mean? You have laid down the ground work for something epically larger. As it stands it's a bit lengthy considering the lack of movement overall but it's a nice journey.

Mix wise everything is bang on there are no peaks, panning and effects are gracefully used, maybe it's a tad middley, but that is likely me not using my monitors. I think a harsh cut to get that build under 4 minutes and then the glitch n vocals would elevate this

Now then....where did i hear this before lol.

This is brilliant mate, everything is well measured. Eq is on, love the melodies. The verb'd kit really adds depth to the mix. I'd love a vocal on this. The panning is bang on, the dynamic range is right. Going for that 80's vibe, it sits in the genre. Some may find the mix restrictive but they missed the point. I'd look to remove the vinyl grain a pop, run a tape emulator but sparsely with significant gaps.

Keep being awesome

LostChronology responds:

Thanks! I am glad I am making progress

Verbs to long with high reflections.

Try valhallha at 10%. This verb is right on top of you with a long decay, it sounds unnatural.

The playing, the chords, the piano choice are all perfect. I think you need to balance the velocity a bit. That verb though, eeeesh. Valhalla, cathedral, 15%. trust me.

Hello mate.

What is left but to say you truly have a unique tone. Which is brilliant. I could identify you out of a thousand tunes and that is a special thing to have.Fuck all wrong with this mix. Bang a vocal and a guitar mid 8 break. money. You are brilliant, keep being you.

nice open. effected.

donk.

hmmmmm. synths too far back. Treb percussion in. yea, i like the build and mix. Your bass pump, not hitting the sweet, but then you cold with trem.

I like this, it's not even my genre, but i like this. It's having a spliff on the come down. Your kick needs more bass less mid. that donk is shite. you want an over sub, boom boom boom.

This is great music, love the vox. Your initial sample is a bit heavy, just thin it. Put a spread enhancer on this, just so the mix works l and r.

etK responds:

Thanks! I'm glad you like it :D
Yes, the mix is far from ideal, but it's because of all of this was done live, using my friend's track and multiple samples.
