That rumble is peaky, maybe roll the db back before the mix.

Huge chorus, lots of clip. Hats too dry.

love the twhippy percussion, harks to joy division.

2 minutes in. It's peaky. I kinda like it though. There's some nice scrapes, but it's overall overwhelmed by the clipped low end.

I think there's potential in redoing this, as a fresh start, maybe from around the 2 min mark, build into a dnb or breaks. Need to eq the section first.

heard better but 5 anyway

Midnights-Ocean responds:

Ah good. Thanks for all the notes. I was very happy with this as a tune but dissatisfied with the mix. No hats used, just a metal bowl with water. Lows show no clipping, so I'm not sure what you are hearing. Maybe something somewhere. The low end is from a mono synth that sports a bit of percussive high end "pop" along with the lows. The original recording was done on an old 4 track tape machine live. Those kinds of adventures can sometimes be cumbersome to mix afterwards. At 2:30 it sounds like there's some compressor or something clipping on the pad. Did a bit of poking around. The pad's 200Hz band was triggering clip distortion on the main's multi band limiter for some reason. First time I've had that plugin give clip distortion like that. Very odd. I fixed it though. Submission file is replaced with updated mix. Thanks for the feedback.

Now then....where did i hear this before lol.

This is brilliant mate, everything is well measured. Eq is on, love the melodies. The verb'd kit really adds depth to the mix. I'd love a vocal on this. The panning is bang on, the dynamic range is right. Going for that 80's vibe, it sits in the genre. Some may find the mix restrictive but they missed the point. I'd look to remove the vinyl grain a pop, run a tape emulator but sparsely with significant gaps.

Keep being awesome

LostChronology responds:

Thanks! I am glad I am making progress

nice open. effected.

donk.

hmmmmm. synths too far back. Treb percussion in. yea, i like the build and mix. Your bass pump, not hitting the sweet, but then you cold with trem.

I like this, it's not even my genre, but i like this. It's having a spliff on the come down. Your kick needs more bass less mid. that donk is shite. you want an over sub, boom boom boom.

This is great music, love the vox. Your initial sample is a bit heavy, just thin it. Put a spread enhancer on this, just so the mix works l and r.

etK responds:

Thanks! I'm glad you like it :D
Yes, the mix is far from ideal, but it's because of all of this was done live, using my friend's track and multiple samples.

KB!

If a man is going to love drones and build, it's going to be me.

That stereo spread is beautiful, filling. You utilize glitch so well in your mixes, but it's a staple of your tone. A VERY classic sine pad.....into the beat. Is it a low rhodes for the chord?

And then the transition,I would have liked a climb into a tiny terror'd guitar crunch, elevate that drive to a new level. However the continuation of the groove with the added noises works equally well.

Your mix is faultless as always.

Kingbastard responds:

Thanks man, appreciate it. It’s some resampled noise/instrument. I don’t even know what. It could’ve been a chopped part of me playing a melodica. I think some low-pitched vocal hum and buzz from a guitar cable in there too. It was a fun little experiment of a track. Could’ve done more, but enjoyed the “jam”:)

You lucky bastard! I'm running through monitors right now.

Mate! How fucking good is this??? I can tell you worked to a flat eq response as all the sub and bass is clean. Now......is it dnb or breaks? This mix is leaning more to dnb, but it's missing that bass pump. So for me it's breaks.

Working in the genre, there's bass, there's some treble, it's energy is all in the lower end which is exactly where it should be, to fill that thin line of mid would ruin a great track.

Your vocal samples could actually be cleaner, but if it's comp'd in mix it explains that.

In a club this bangs............

i want to hear the midnight dub 8 minute epic

5 all day

Midnights-Ocean responds:

You bring a smile to my face mate! A rare thing these days indeed. My memory of jungle tends to be the more permutated stuff, probably round the later half of the 90s and early early 2000s. Right about the time the line between breaks and D&B was being blurred all over the place. At least, that's how I remember it. "Atmospheric jungle" I recall some people calling it.

Yes I was very happy with how tight this mix turned out. And yes, in the car, I still wanted more clarity from the vocals. I think just a little more EQ, a light exciter or just plain more volume on them might do it. I'll do what I always do, mix the thing a little more every time I come across the project file.

heh dat bass pump. I'd love to hit the bass more like that but it can be such an illusive thing for me, getting that perfect D&B bass.

lol I'd love to do more D&B, dub and jungle in general, but it's the kinda thing I really gota be in the mood for, or it just turns out boring and disjointed. It isn't purely D&B by any stretch of the imagination but I AM working on a jungle flavored album: https://midnightsocean.bandcamp.com/album/paradigms-unique

It's a tall order though, for me personally, because the genre in the 90s left such an impression on me, I feel the bar has been set quite high and I don't get satisfaction unless I reach it, even if it's just a tiny pinkie barely brushing by it. : )

who doesn't worship labs! did you get the free bbc one or the paid one?

Your composition is great. It's the highs, i have no idea what you have changed but you need to address it, youre murdering my ears.

Troisnyx responds:

Lots of air~ That's where we're at. I could turn down the master a little bit, because that brings it all up.

I got Discover, the free one.

Hmmmmmmm, there's a pattern here.

Have you moved to new equipment or changed how you're mixing, are you on cans only?

I really like this, very william orbit, madonnas ray of light album.

mate, those high frequencies are killing my ears, badly. Something has changed in your mixing and it needs addressing immediately.

Troisnyx responds:

I have moved to a new computer, yes.

Now then!

Loving the use of foley, I did one yeeeeeeeeeears ago Dark Nite built around a storm.

https://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/45613 (4th track i posted here in 2006)

Man, i love this track, it's proper trip hop, it's chill, but upbeat. Kingbastard/myheadisaballoon posts a lot of stuff similar.

It literally tingles my cerebellum, for me it's perfect music. It's well mixed, though the glitch'd bit crushed beat near the end is a bit compressed. I do hear exactly what you're going for and any critique would be preference only.

A vocal, or some vox samples would be killer.

Great work

pbj

Midnights-Ocean responds:

thanks brah! :D Yeah if I had access to some vox I would write some lyrics for it. would be pretty cool. that beat at the end was really spiky, so I had to hit it kinda hard with compression. Next time I visit this one, I'll see if I can get that to be a bit more transparent.

my man!

All this needs is some uplift comp and exciting. Love the tune, love the vox.

All the work here is in post.

keep it up

ConnorDeVaux responds:

ah thanks a lot for the kind review :)

eh up mate.

LOVE THE VOX. I see someone using reversed reverb :)

Them harmonies. Mwah.

Your singular vocal, too much verb.....it's accentuating your errors. I'd maybe take the shimmer and octave off, i suspect it's valhalla maj verb.

the drum and support vox yes! daaaaaaaaaamn.

I honestly believe your lead vox stops this being a proper 10. If you're going to lead you have to nail every note, no amount of effect work will save you.

The track is polished, everything sounds pro, well comp'd, verb'd and eq'd. Except for your lead, it sounds like you are unable to project.

this is a 5 all day, but that vox needs fixing

Troisnyx responds:

Spot-on about the lead vox, I tend to not project too well when I'm seated down (which is my current recording position). I need to be standing for this sort of thing; it appears my lungs have gone into full chorister mode and are not coming back from that. ☺️

As for 'verb, nope, it's all software defaults.
