dark

wonderful intro, ambient noise, your voice, so subversive, with retrospective on the track d9, rings massively, very alien though not alienating. that synth about 2 mins in, FUNKY, christ funky. I've gotta say...somethings lost...me and thee, many others, nay countless others...we've hit this wall, you're doing music by numbers here mate. do not get take it as if im implying your resting on laurels, it is infact the complete opposite that i make that comment, it seems here you're trying to meet an 'expected' audience. it's nigh on universal to our tribe.

The tune itself, awesome, it ticks the boxes, i feel like a twat to say it but u would expect me to say it, it's bland, it doesnt appeal, you are capable of far more infinitely better music. I hope ur doing as im doing, retospectively going through works. as far as i can go, nothing grips, I DO get IMagery, your playing is great, production is great. It feels lifeless though, christ i cant believe im being this harsh on you. maybe its because i have high expectations of you, i dunno, i just feel deflated after listening for the 8th time. fuck......sorry 5/10

innit

opening guitar too compressed, reminds me massively of early idlewild, hope that aint a slight but it is. I know, coming from me especially, your dirty rhtyhm...it's too dirty, in that it dominates the track. But by joe, what a track. and ur on drums u say. fuck me. its missing a touch of subtlety, you need more licks earlier. the vocalist is briliant. your drums are exquisite (sp?). now this isnt 10/10 for a few arbitrary reasons, the middle 8 redeems alot of the minor faults, i just feel there could be more space afforded for each musician to express himself, it's 7/10 compared to it's genre 10/10 on here.

curriemaster responds:

Agreed on all counts I think chief. I basically took on the task of drummer because I wanted to learn how to play the drums; this is my questionable level of skill after a little less than a year I think (I have thankfully progressed further since this recording). Its recorded OK for a live studio track but as you say the drums are too present and the bass is nearly nonexistant (we actually have a really decenet bassist). Wasnt mixed by me unfortunately so I cant go and remix it! :(

Thanks for the honest review, thats the best kind!

oooooooooooooooooooookay

as you may have noticed im going backwards here, for fucks sake, jesus christ on a bike, fuck me quick and call me susan! as if u play the old joanna mate, your melody is fantastic as is the support. The bridge and refrain stand out for their starkness in this piece, you have a wonderful touch and timing to your playing style which allows for you to be exceptionally expressive. I can't do this, and could never hope to, it just shows me up to be the pathetic musician that i am, and i aint asking for pity. YOU are a musician, im just a chancer mate who gets lucy from time to time. You need to focus on your piano work there is no doubt about that, share it, let us critique it. I don't care for your age, you are an exceptional talent, always were, more so now. straight 10.

curriemaster responds:

LOL yes another glorious review. You put so much more personality in your reviews than most people; makes them very fun to read. Im flattered you like the track as much as that, I also think its a pretty soothing, floaty kind of tune. Pretty good for something knocked out in 20 mins.

I would love to do more stuff like this but honestly my keyboard is a big pile of suck and coaxing some dynamic expression out of it is like wringing pineapple juice from an extremely dehydrated koala.

Much appreciate the comments mate.

oooooooooooooooooooooo

super furry animals! You thieving fucktard lol. Yes it's a massive lend but hey ive nicked a million and one tunes from other bands, the track fails to jump in my mind but its 3am and im on red wine. It's awesome though, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, how did u get ur acoustic lead THAT clean, christ. me and thee need to collab mate, we would make something truly wonderous. critically i can't fault it, the sound quality IS professinal, not semi, it is purchasable. instantly catchy, melody jumps out. A slight lack of development holds me back from givng you a perfect score, but it's Hart Attack for the modern kids lol. Hit me up on my personal email, pitbulljones@hotmail.co.uk, i haven't been inspired for months you may have just sparked something.

curriemaster responds:

Yo Pitters sorry for the ridiculously long time for a reply, been hyper busy and sort of lost track with NG. Glad you enjoyed the song, I think it came out kinda sub par to be honest with you but after doing about 6 damn hours of clapping I just wanted it all to be over. The guitar did come out pretty nice and shiny though which is fairly enjoyable. I would give this song a 6/10 personally but Im my harshest critic :P.

Im going to hit you up phat on that email, be AFRAID :D

wellllllllllllllllllll

very clear guitar, on the right and a nice rhytmn guitar in the left, we need some overall verb on the track tho and a little treatment on mixxing, your lower mid is packing far too much weight on my speakers, clogging up a lot of the delicate high and woodwind. Much, much potential. The drums, i can see where the compression has come from now, too marked though, it pulls the whole track down into the more balanced mix, use some lighter settings, needs a gentle compress not a hgeavy one. Reminds me a lot of an SFA tune. thats a good thing, great stuff, tho not a love tune if you gt me drift, awesome though, has all the right elements, just needs mastering better.

curriemaster responds:

Yo chief cheers for the comments they are pretty much spot on with my thinking I think. I think there is some boominess/muddiness that I couldnt seem to shake but I reckon it only shows up on some peoples headphones/speakers. It sounds good in my headphones but when I tested on my (admittedly crap) speakers it was distorting the stupid bastards. I went with the risky option and mixed to my headphones...praying that the judges would listen on nice headphones or monitors.

The drums are an electronic drum kit that I played and they have some damn built in compression, Ive tried lowering the velocity of some key notes and it changes the sample they play (like the snare plays a rasp instead of a hit). Ill try and fiddle with the e-drums setting some more to see if I can get some more range as its been pissing me off for a while.

If you are referring to super furry animals then thanks very much they are pretty excellente, cheers :D. We shall see how the judging goes on Saturday, thanks a lot for the skillful comments.

awwwwwwwww

how nice to hear you again matey, ive just clicked the tune haha, tis boyzone, you say it best when you say nothing at all hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Awesome finger play though, i'm VVVVVVVVVVVV there somewhere you're ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ somewhere when it comes to guitar play, who are the lil vocal sounds from? they add a touch of elegance to the already tranquil soundset. I see someone is getting his vsts as well, good to know. There is some slight errors noticeably only and only because of the reverb setting, they exacerbate the slight picking errors making something which would be inaudible into an audible 'twang'. It's wonderful and all it needs is a full vocal over it to make it truly stand out. peace and hugs

pitters

curriemaster responds:

Hey man cheers for the comments and great to see you out and about again! This is song is soooo fuuuuucking cheeeesy but its really grown on me. To be honest everyone else seems to prefer my other Valentines submission but this one is totally Boyzone bebbe woooo!

Aye I do make a few minor mistakes and the reverb does some weird harmonic/ringing shit that I didnt notice at first when I was mixing down...not really sure how to eliminate that as I like the reverb throughout the rest of the song...if you have any suggestions id be happy to listen. My girlfriend did the vocals, she basically gave me the idea (and by that I mean order) for this tune saying "it should be only two instruments and I will whisper some french on it". And that was that.

Maybe this could do with a lengthening and some full vocals as you suggest. I would need some help with that though ;)

Thanks a lot for the review man and good to see you back, ciaoder

nice

very warm recording, u using analogue gear by any chance, sounds like it. Or you have some good mastering plugins. the track comes across as a jam tape, not much in the way of development but some good ideas and key changes. Work on the track and expand it, there is somethin in this if you give the guitar more space between notes, always nice to hear something new from you. Keep it real.

WinTang responds:

hey pitters mate!
I feel like a cheater now because I hardly did any mastering on this. Don't have a clue where to take this further, I'll ask you for tips next time we "meet"
Thanks for the reviewy

Long time no speak

hello old friend, got tinternet back now, all is good in the world. thought id peruse a track to see what the hell ur making these days. it seems you're still making brilliant tunes.

i always use your tunes as a yardstick for where i am production wise, it seems you've made leaps and bounds again.

Fantastic tune mate, tho i prefer the last section for its very dark, moody edge. Your sax is brilliant. A few gripes with the main section, for some bizarre reason it doesn't have any warmth in it. The drums are quality tho. A bit of harmony and prose would really lift the track to a another level. it layers well, and the contrast between the synths and more traditional instruments is a good example of a musician who knows his shit.

Keep this up and expand the B section of the track there is huge potential from what i can gather.

9/10 and the 5 as per

long time indeed, been out of the game for a while, tinterweb game and music. am unenthused and uninspired with both, this is the most comprehensive thing i've made in months. don't think i'll be doing any more to it, i installed my sound card on my laptop after only having the onboard for a while and the file is mashed, classic ped eh?
anyhoo, good to read your voice, much love, speaky soon, i'm back on mesenger now
