hmmmmm

Goona let this loop a couple of times. Snares missing reverb. I like all the delays and arpy synths, just very 'electronic' and when i saw it was techno as the genre i nearly died, i can't stand techno. it's not bad again tho, some nice ideas going on and some nice controlling of the synths. the beat needs more variation even if it was an 8 bar loop.

When it ends it feels like it should be kicking into a harder tune, and whats that inexplicable 'pop' at the end lol?

It does have an element of intro about it, which isn't necessaryily a bad thing, ive done a few tunes the same.

I wouldn't listen to it again mate, not my cup of tea, and i'm left expecting something far more, but maybe as menu music or something in flash it'd work well.

3.5 again mon cher. 4

Syntrus responds:

Well i'm banking on it to win the contest. This one or ZEro level thx a lot i'll get you a review as soon as possible XD

Nice again

I like the bit crushed effects, always a alil old school earlier in the mix, the scratching is a detriment to the tune, do not like it one bit is a really distracting, needs far more variation and dynamism to be worthy of going into a track. the arrange is pretty sparse in itself, not a whole lot going on, simple and effective though not exactly mind blowing. I can't say i like this anywhere as much as the previous tune, seems like this is more of a scratching exercise then a musical one. regardless of the intentions don't forget the rest of the mix, i'm always told this.

it's a 3.5/5

I'll 4's it tho.

Syntrus responds:

Whatever man u gotta experiment u know how it is. I try it out here then I know what the ppl want and mass it as an album on noisehead.

Nice!

Really liked this one, the opening 'guitar'ish line is nice, the production is really crisp, dark, moody. The kick is too heavy though sounds out of place, needs a more authentic sound.

The arrangement is awesome, seriously, suits my mood alot, very massive attack, DJ shadow ish, needs a few breaks and glitch in the beat and you'd have a really really good tune. Vocals would be a nice edition too.

It's pretty faultless 'cept for the beat, seems a bit to near i dunno. a longer reverb on the snare would be better here too.

It has tonnes of potential this track. very impressed.

5/5

Syntrus responds:

Thx Pitters all be by in no time i'm just a busy basterd

very cool

Very cool track mate, even if you've only put minimal time in. i fooking luuuuurrrrrvvvveeeeee sex.....and sax too. how many layers is there? sounds like 4 at some point. It feels like it belongs to a fuller track, like a middle 8 or summat, my old singer would have a joy rapping over this. have a look on my music myspace check for 'only done nocturnally' thats me eld singer, he's in holland but i reckon i cud get him to lay a vocal down on this dunno.

anyways it's trés cool. is reggae sauce done by HP by any chance?

5 mate

snoballandthmonyshot responds:

ta the bull,
is so satisfying to layer this shit up. my skills need much refinement but i can get away with it for the minute. yeh, i kinda wanna write this into a full track, something a little more tasteful than this cheap beat and b-line.
onwards sir knight

ohhhh

very nice twinkling bell in the opening. again it has that 'midi-ish' feel to it, it's also a very clinical track too clean cut. Tho not formulaic of drum n bass it certainly has elements of the genre. Tho im more of a fan when there are pots and pans flying everywhere compared to this restrained approach.

The strings are really nice again. melody lines are good too, and the bass line is wonderful warm, I really like the second section of the track, the beat is quality when in full flight.

The third section is a bit deflating compared to the second, it needed to keep going with the pace, rather than slowling to the end, that 'midi-ish' problem arrives again too when the drums are more exposed.

mixing is spot on again, choice of instruments too, all fits very nicely im just left with wanting more after the second section that 3rd is a good ending, just needs more middle.

good stuff nevertheless, it's another 4/5.

pitters

interesting...

to say the least, i'm gonna admit to you now i aint a massive trance fan but i will try my best here.

The opening of the track was pretty nice, i loved that lo-fi piano that distorts slighty. tho the percussion sounded a bit 'midi-ish' tho not totally, it was almost a bit too polished too.

the actually trance section is good, nice melody lines and arpeggios, if a bit generic in synth choice for the genre but thats what works, the strings compliment the mix very nicely. standard 2-step beats, one of the hats rings out too much tho. theres a lot of drama once the scond strings kick in as well.

The final section ends nicely, back with the piano, tho theres a bit a distort which i think detracts here rather than adds. Its a good track nonetheless.

production wise, reason is very handy at this, pretty much guarenteed a good mix. pans are good, and the dynamics are spot on, plenty of light and shade.

Personally i wouldn't listen to this again, just not my stuff, but it's good . i think 4/5 is about right for it too.

keep it up, let me know if you need any more reviews.

pitters

Ohhhh very good opening

loved that opening, thought for a second where it was going then, that bass (line) kick, came in and i thought 'Oh Yessssss!'

Lots of proverbial pots and pans being chucked about in this tune, thats your beat arrangement im on about, really off kilter, but freaking awesome.

It's quite an intensely moody and dark track, be absolutely terrible to hear hungover or coming down. great for a night out tho.

I think the main melodic synth may be a lil quiet compared to the beats, seems to be fighting for attention but its a minor gripe.

The production is spot on, full of musical energy and dynamism, pans are right, sound choice is bang on, like i said earlier that synth is desperately fighting for some space, it's either a case of rolling some of that bass off, or pushing it more into the mix. awesome tho.

5/5 mate.

LJCoffee responds:

Thanks for the review! There are, as you've mentioned, a few issues with levels - I'm blaming headphones for that. I still have not quite yet learned how to compensate for what I think I hear through cans.

I made two mistakes on this one, I created it using headphones, tweaked things and then only ran it through externals for a few quick adjustments - almost always a mintake.

The second has more to do with compression. I usually apply a bit of compression to certain elements as well as a little medium compression to the master bus - with this one I bounced everything and then cut it up a little to create the stutters and repeats here and there. By doing that, I compressed everything during the bounce and then it all got recompressed during the export.

That may be why certain instruments feel like they're fighting for freq space and/or why the volume levels are off a bit.

Thanks again - let me know when you have some new stuff up.

hey man...

how you doing, just thought i'd bob by your page just checked this tune out. it's a really chilled out tune. The vocal tho in tune and musically clear seems a little bit held back, missing some energy, try a bit of compression, the double track is too perfect, have you took another take for the double or just copied the part? try using a detune on a monitor speak but not in the mix, or a small delay of 50ms then record your take, it'll just make it sound a bit more natural.

The guitar is sweet, nice picking and rhytmn support, is there a bass in there or is it the E string playing bass? anyways it's very clear the bass section, again the overall sound is a little muffled, lacking some energy, i think a little bit of overall compression on the track and an aurual enhancer would do wonders for the musical energy of this track.

overall tho the composition is really good, a chilling song, a little on the short side, maybe benifit from some string arrangments and some mellow percussion. but i really enjoyed listening to this song. been looping now for about 10 mins.

4.5/5 so you get a 5

(Couple of tracks up, less, 3 months down the line, Scarred, spiritual loop. scarred is the latest one)

curriemaster responds:

Yo pitters thanks for the good review as always. I agree with you abou tthe vocals, Im not really a vocalist so Im not sure how I would go about recording this better. I didnt use a double track though; just sang the same thing twice.

Might have to redo this again one day with more length and more awesome. Thanks a lot for the review dude!

another oooooooh

you have been a busy boy aint ya? i like this track alot, that sax is very cool. what synth u using for that.

im actually prefering this to the other track, just has a warmth about it, and musically even tho there are 'bum' notes, theyre meant to be there. glitching is bang on.

production is sweet, tho about the 3rd phrase where its just the sax and gltich it seems comparitively loud. dunno why. the guitar is poor in quality on that bit, sounds like one of my old recordings from about 6 years ago. why so???

anyways mate, loved it, really did. 5/5 and bum sex.

pitters

i do have a couple of tracks up for reviewing whenever u get a mo. new one today called scarred too.

snoballandthmonyshot responds:

glad u liked it... that sax is a sax, not a synth.
poor quality guitar, i don't think so, you must have shit in your ears;/
;ped

oooooooooooh

haha, bit of a weird one this mate, vey much 'computer music'.

The glitching is ace, i don't like that vocoder/talk synth one bit tho, too much of it and it detracts from the arrangement in the earlier part of the mix.

sort of reviewing on the fly here but the 2nd/3rd phrase of the piece is awesome, with the tablas, sax, and another sitar/guitar line. really mellow stuff. the glitch elements and 808s really compliment the sound here.

a dreamy, breathy harmony would be nice in that section.

haha the guitar in the 4th phrase is really jazzy, a weird choice of notation, too much delay on that vocal mind.

some of the instrument choices i wudnt necessarily make but then again this is your tune so who am i to complain, it's good stuff....one fault i have on it is it does seem to feel like theres 3 or 4 songs all put into one mix, missing a bit of glue. it's hard to make sense of. but the strongest part is definately the 2nd and 3rd phrase of the piece, definatley lose that vocoder synth early on tho.

good stuff mate, it's about a 4/5 in its present state. but cos im nice it's a 5.

pitters

snoballandthmonyshot responds:

cheeers matey,
it's not a vocoder and i loves it... maybe does get a bit played but it's the only thing really holding the first half of the track together, will think on it tho...
gonna work on the join where it just cuts out to nothing b4 the sax comes in and build up the next section into more of a section, just starts to get going then it trails out. that might allow me to scrap the 3rd section entirely.
anyways, helpful review, ta
