eh up mush

thought id bob by and see whats the track. Just my luck i wander on to a little gem of a track. This track has a wonderfully sinister vibe to it, dark, broody and moody yet it retains some euphoric elements, mainly the chordal synth that goes up in semitones. the kick is really good, has a slightly driven edge to it. the snare is a tad week in comparison though, need something closer, hard, with a bit of verb, but thats a personal decision. How do you get that vocal as well, sounds like a child flanged to the max and metalised.

those bongo sounds filling the bg are ace, its a nice touch that adds alot to the track. The bassy synth is dirty as sin, it makes me want to wash haha. Really suits the mood.

Overall for what is essentially a quite simple arrangement it works astonishingly well, I have had the track on loop now for a good 30 mins, it would fit well into a moive or game due to it's looping if abstract nature. The production is flawless too, excellently mixed, the only gripe as ive mentioned is that snare. So to summarise, an awesome tune, nice to hear something new from you and keep the shizzle on me jizzle with the whizzle and the bizzle innit.

Hey PBJ!

Thanks for the write-up. This track was a last minute MAC submission. If you haven't yet seen the topic(s) they're here:

We'll see what happens. According to the rules, 1st through 3rd get a splash of cash which is always cool. 4th and 5th get shirts and stickers - but I already have a few shirts so I was really hoping for some of that cruel cruel mockery that's set aside for 6th - 10th. :D

Next time around, I'll morph the snare - start out with whatever and over time bring up the reverb and make it a little punchier via some nifty eq work. That might work out well.

Thanks for inspiring me with an idea or two!

Take it eask PBJ,

howdy man

just noticed this popped up, how's things fella?

tune is really mellow, the guitars are exceptionally warm, the melody skips along nicely, some nice airy vocals would work a treat on this. I think the mix may be a little dullish for some reason or another in toneality, like a really old analogue tape, but there is that much sought after warmth. Overall then a quality tune that is chilling to say the least. I hope you start resubmitting some tracks mate as i love your music.

WinTang responds:

Hi mate,
things have been better but nothing that passing of time won't fix, how are you?
Thanks for the review on this, I was really hoping you'd be around to hear this actually. The mix, yeah, meh. I know... I don't think I have the patience. As long as the general idea is clear, I'm happy.
I'm hoping to make a sort of comeback here, I'm currently working on a short instrumental demo CD and I'd like to upload and collect reviews.
I'll just go over to your page now and see what you've been up to. Cheers, and talk to you soon.

weird

wonderfully melodic, if u can remember dizzy u've got c64 or even spectrum nailed.

lovely nostalgia, your kit is too tight and too modern mind, needs more crunching, it bounces me head regardless, which to me means its awesome.

You're too fuckin kind!

perfection

you've taken all i love best about music and presented it on a plate. I drool as i listen. this track is perfect barring one thing.

VOCAL!!!!!!! It needs it, to finish it, to make it truly ranked as awesome on a released level/

i love the licks of dnb, of sliced and choppedness, the reverse. Why can't i do this, whe my own ideas want tis exact thing to happen?????????

awesome

Vocal, geddit done!

LJCoffee responds:

I'm always missing vocals. Now what sort of vox would best fit... hmmm... Lemme think on that a bit

some very nice stuff

Going on here. The snare isn't though XD. The guitars are awesome, some true fret anking and muting, good rythmic style. bass is simple but effective. The snare is doing my nut in haha. Production is great as per. Im slowly clicking on as to why you get a really clear distort sound, and it's mainly down to actually restricting the frequency content, chopping much of the high end off but it works really well.

It is really hard to comment with authority on the styles involved as I don't follow the genres, it may be something you find with mine, but technically its brilliant. Theres some deceptively simple but excellent playing going on, and for all the 'metal' it has it is surprisingly melodic in contrast to more modern music, but yes i know this is more of a 'throwback' it's something ive always admired about your style.

production is spotless like i said earlier. that snare is bad though, too incessant, no verb, too bright and too up front. thats about the only major gripe i have.

nice swirling synth that starts the track. be warned this is not to my taste, the genre that is. Some very good stuff going on once the beat kicks in, arpys and that 'encore un frois' guitar. I am currently listening on speakers at my families home so i can't pick up bass end, meaning the kit feels light but im sure once i listen on my own speakers it'll be fine. Where are the vocal samples from they work well.

It reminds me a lot of euro trance, has a strong summer vibe about it. Has trademark trance euphoria all over the track. The production seems faultless from what i can gather, as it's trance the kit doen't need to be live, but you have made good sample choices and the reverb helps to give it depth. I definately like those dark early arps and the contrast with the 'guitar'. Its a very well produced track in my eyes. and for a trance track it has everything i'm expecting to hear, nothing to out of the ordinary, with the layers building up nicely, there's a lot that my ear wanders to.

Maybe, as a possibility go all out and get that female vocal on it, see if my friend is willing to bang something down. i think it'd work a treat. But the track is great as is.

9/10 and a 5 my son

Anima-Theory responds:

I originally designed this track to have vocals, but that didn't happen, seeing as I can't find a vocalist for anything, male or female.

If you could find me one, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Thanks for the review man, drop me a line when a new track of yours comes out :D

very nice crunchy and heavy guitars, good variation on the drums, as always Ive noticed even though theres a lot going on distortion wise it doesnt feel muddied, everything has space to hear. The counter point from about 0:40 in is very nice. haha the junior bit is really cool, a great contrast, almost poppy by comparison to the 'dad' section. Really cool track overall, and the two sections contrast really well without sounding disjointed. 5/5 and a 10 as well my son.

DarKsidE555 responds:

Yeah, I tried several things out and thought that a heavy contrast to the "dad" section would do the job. It should provide some lolls for the listener, if you know what I mean. ;D

Anyways, thanks for the review back daddy. ;)

oooooooo

I have that exact same sample, you aint been mooching the sound effects library have you? nice pizzicato with the delay, as the woodwind is too. Now when them drums kicked in ive noticed your bg is too forward. I can't make your bass clearly. Side chain it through your beat so it drops in level when it's in.

I have a track kinda similar to this, dark nite, from yonks ago. The use of rain and electro. A nice rap vocal, not gangsta rap but rap innit, floetry would be immense on this track. Your ending is too protracted mind, i was expecting a change or something. But yea, a nice experiement in soundscapes. another 8/10. get some vocals on it.

pitters

Anima-Theory responds:

The bass was designed to sound friggen awesome played loud and on a big system. Most stereo systems can't replicate the deep hum that the bass line has, thus it looses a lot of power on small systems. Try it on a big system if you can, you can almost feel it moving you :D

I would put vocals in a lot more of my music.....if I had a vocalist :(

Thanks for the review

Liking that bass, reminds me a bit of Unkle 'lonely souls'. Snares too soft, too poppy. it works in a weird way but i think it should be less bright. that lil riff in e is nice, the leady guitar. I have a very similar riff i use on a song i gig with my mate or used too. Second bass on the third phrase nice, understated. adds a lot though. Again those drums just ain't doing this track justice, some lil breakbeats, fills and rolls would help immensly. Or do what i did get ezdrummer.

Vocals would be a nice touch, some hushed ian brown style ones, with plenty of harmonies ahhhhhing away. The track as it stands offers huge potential and is solid as is, doing another run through, that snare needs to change. The kits too weak. deep sub kick to complement the bass and a really hard close snare witha touch of after ring. Cowbell might work and i stress might.

Quality is good, no clipping and a good even level in my speakers, even though there is plenty of bass each part has it's own space, good stuff. Overall it's an 8/10 as i love its darkness and i love the composition. drums need to change though.

pitters

Anima-Theory responds:

Thanks for the review man :D

OK, now to clear some things up. The drums are boring because I wanted the person listening to be attracted to the bass line and not get distracted by the drums, also it's a bass serenade, so I thought the bass should take charge and be the more complex instrument, and for slow songs like these break beats wouldn't fit.

Again, I wouldn't have ever added vocals because I intended this to be a Bass only track, and I don't think there is enough "cover" for vocals. Harmonious vocals may have fit, but again, as the name suggests, its a bass serenade :P

I couldn't change the volume of the kick from, mainly because there is so much bass going on, I had clipping issues.

I'm not ripping into you or being vengeful by the way, I'm merely saying :D

Thanks A LOT for the review :D

something different to the palette. There's a tune in this, scratch pad vocals, i know a guy who could marvels on this with lyrics. good thumping kick, nice bit of echo/verb on it. the loop itself feels far longer than it is, feels like it's constantly evolving which is very good. loving all the hits and clangs and the glitch. works a treat. 10/10 my friend. Be on the look out for some tunes over the next weeks/months of mine. The Puppy Dog Tales.
